The Harbor freight railroad was a significant component of the city’s industrial base in the late 1800’s. It was the first railroad to connect Chicago and the western suburbs. It has since been destroyed by Hurricane Ike, but it was a significant component of the city’s industrial base and is still in use today. As a city, we are dependent on these railroad tracks. If they are not maintained, they will fail and cost our city billions of dollars.
This is an exciting new development, and the developers have clearly made lots of progress since their trailer last year. Last year, they showed a train on its way to Chicago, but that was just the start of their new project. We have not yet seen Harbor freight freight cars on the road in Seattle, at least, but the footage from last year is good enough to say that the cars have already arrived.
Harbor freight was one of those things that seemed so far-fetched that it never made the front page of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Seattle’s railroads have a history of being a bit of a backwater for rail technology. The track itself is made of metal, and the trains are made of steel.
